Although in most cases the content of the collections is limited to a small space, their presence ensures the preservation of the identity of local Slovenian communities. This is particularly true for collections located in smaller settlements, where basic public infrastructure (e.g., schools, shops, post offices) is being phased out due to population out-migration. The presence of museums keeps these places alive and the population active.

Within this framework, traditional events (carnival parades, cultural events) are organized, in which entire local communities participate, attracting a large number of visitors from the wider region, including across borders. At the same time, museum staff are actively involved in general operations and efforts to develop the Slovenian community both within the Province of Udine and the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia (FJK). The main purpose of the research was to examine the local population’s attitude toward museum collections and the content presented by these institutions, as well as the impact of the institutions’ public activities on the development and strengthening of Slovenian national consciousness and culture. In addition, emphasis was placed on analyzing connections with the homeland.

In this way, political, museum, and other research institutions, as well as the interested public, can gain a more detailed insight into the cultural, ethnic, and social conditions of the Slovenian community in Italy, particularly in areas where it faces the greatest challenges. From the perspective of the development of the field in border regions and the importance of such institutions for overall social progress, the results are particularly useful for the Slovenian and Italian museum sectors.

This academic text, to be published in early 2024 and available on various online platforms, will contribute to the understanding of the public activities of the Slovenian community in Italy, which, within the museum context, works to promote the development and visibility of Slovenian culture in the Udine area. Work Process The research was conducted during the spring months of 2023 and focused on analyzing the results of two projects (Language/Lingua — Multilingualism as a Wealth and Value of the Cross-Border Slovenian-Italian Area and Collections – Cultural Heritage in Collections between the Alps and the Karst) from the Slovenia-Italy Cross-Border Cooperation Program 2007-2013, which were implemented in the Province of Udine between 2009 and 2015.

In addition, relevant literature and journal sources were reviewed, particularly Primorski dnevnik and Novi Matajur. An interview was also conducted with Dora Ciccone, a representative of the Institute for Slovenian Culture, based in Cividale. Due to the limited amount of allocated funds, certain changes were made to the initial plan, resulting in a reduction in the scope of the field research. Instead of visiting museums and conducting in-person interviews with museum staff, collection owners, and local residents, the project author communicated with these individuals via email or telephone. The work thus focused on reviewing materials available in Ljubljana (libraries of the Research Center of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Institute for Ethnic Studies, the Institute of Contemporary History, and the Department of History at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana) or online (Digital Library of Slovenia). Based on a relevant selection of appropriate sources and literature, an original scientific paper was prepared (length: 5,651 words, 40,145 characters including spaces, Appendix 1), which was submitted for publication in August 2023 as part of a scientific monograph by the Institute for Ethnic Studies. The book will be published in early 2024.

Results and Dissemination

The main outcome of the research was the preparation of an original scientific paper titled “We Have Enriched Our Valleys with Our Culture and Our Heritage”: Museums as Strengtheners of Slovenian National Consciousness in the Videm Region.

The article provides a detailed overview of the operations of selected museums of the Slovenian community in the Videm region. The article focuses on the broader social and ethnic significance that such institutions hold in areas where there is a lack of education and other infrastructure that would have a positive impact on the development of the Slovenian community. The Slovenian community in Venetian Slovenia, Resia, and the Kanal Valley has faced numerous challenges in the past, primarily poor economic development, a negative demographic trend, and pressure from Italian authorities and society, which for decades have in various ways prevented or hindered the public use and development of the Slovenian language in the Udine region. The Slovenian community found one way to preserve Slovenian identity, language, and culture in the establishment of local museums, which have been founded in the border region where the Slovenian population lives since the 1970s. They have gained particular significance especially since the beginning of this millennium, when several factors emerged that enabled the sector’s accelerated development. In 2001, the Republic of Italy officially recognized the Slovenian community in the Udine area; in subsequent years, with financial contributions from the Italian and Slovenian sides, as well as through European projects and funding, Slovenian minority organizations succeeded in expanding their activities and devoted special attention to the development of museums. Today, numerous museum collections play a significant role in preserving Slovenian culture, language, and traditions, while also educating and promoting the community in local, national (Italian), and cross-border (Slovenian, European) contexts. Furthermore, their activities are integrated into the framework of cultural tourism, which has a positive impact on the social and economic profile of the region.

The study focused specifically on the analysis of successful cross-border projects involving institutions of the Slovenian community in the Udine area and certain leading Slovenian and Italian cultural, research, and educational institutions that are directly or indirectly linked to the border region between the Republic of Slovenia and Italy.

The main result of this collaboration was the establishment of the most important museum of its kind in the region—the Slovenian Multimedia Window, which operates in Špetru Slovenov and presents the cultural characteristics of the Slovenian community from Milje in the south to the Kanal Valley in the north of the FJK region. This museum coordinates activities and also collaborates with other, smaller museums, most of which are located in villages in Venetian Slovenia, Resia, and the Kanal Valley. The role of these museums is multifaceted and goes beyond merely preserving, presenting, and interpreting the exhibited objects and other ethnological and narrative content. Such work was of great importance during a period when the Slovenian community faced pressure and was not officially recognized by the Republic of Italy. It enabled the preservation of Slovenian cultural and linguistic heritage and national consciousness in an environment that was not friendly to the minority. The Slovenian community, through its organizations and associations, thus devoted special attention to this aspect and allocated substantial financial resources received from various sources (Italian, Slovenian, European), which over the past decade has resulted in the establishment of the aforementioned museum and the upgrading of infrastructure and exhibition capabilities at other existing museums. Today, museum collections thus serve as central hubs and windows to the world for presenting Slovenian minority culture and language (dialects) in the Udine area, both in relation to their own minority community and to the populations of Italy, Slovenia, and the wider region. Their role is crucial for strengthening and preserving identity. In addition to the original scholarly contribution, a public lecture is planned in Špetru Slovenov following the publication of the collection, where the topic will be presented to the Slovenian community in the Udine area.

Report

[60
post-9259","projects","type-projects","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","project-categories-projects-of-ministries-and-government-offices
["GET
