Robert Devetak, PhD about Valentin Stanič

In 2024, we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Valentin Stanič, a priest from Gorizia who lived in turbulent times from Maria Theresa to the Spring of Nations. From Bodrež pri Kanalu ob Soči, he went to seek knowledge in Tarvisio, Klagenfurt and Salzburg, and returned to his countrymen eager to contribute to any progress.

The documentary portrait shows him through numerous fields of activity: as a mountaineer, benefactor, writer, teacher, founder of the first deaf-mute association and the first association against animal cruelty in our country. In Bavaria, he is famous as the first person to climb Mount Watzmann, and in Slovenia, he was the first to measure the height of Mount Triglav, he vaccinated the population of Kanalsko during a smallpox epidemic, and educated the faithful about new agricultural innovations during his sermons… All of this was discussed by experts who know his work and who still inspire them with his enthusiasm, enthusiasm, and optimism.
