On Thursday, March 5, 2026, a discussion on the topic The National Question in the Vibrant 21st Century was held in the Alma Karlin Hall of Ljubljana’s Cankarjev Dom with emeritus professor Danilo Türk, PhD, former President of the Republic of Slovenia, former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Political Affairs, respected diplomat and expert in international law and human rights.
The event was prepared by the Institute to mark the 100th anniversary of the Institute for Ethnic Issues and to enter its 102nd year of operation.
In a world where populism, nationalism, racism, xenophobia are growing, and some of the most powerful countries in the world violate and ignore international law, declare wars and destabilize international relations, a fresh, analytical and current view of minority rights, (inter)ethnic relations, the protection of minorities and their status is critical.
The audience was able to listen to reflections on the current global situation in the world, the status of human rights and fundamental freedoms, the role of researchers and research institutes on minority and ethnic issues, on the protection of minorities and their members, and on the state of democracy in Slovenia and elsewhere.
The discussion was led byProfessor Dr. Mitja Žagar.
