Supplementary instruction in native languages and cultures for children of other ethnicities

Work on the research and development project Supplementary Instruction in Native Languages and Cultures for Students of Other Ethnicities is carried out in three separate work packages, which are, however, interconnected in terms of content and timing. These are:

    1. Professional and scientific content and public relations: this involves carrying out specific professional research and scientific activities related to the project, as well as presenting the operations and content of the professional research project to interested parties and the general public. In addition to conducting research, this work package also includes professional training for stakeholders, particularly within the framework of the annual professional meeting of all participating teachers.
    2. Implementation of Hungarian language instruction: – assistance in conducting Hungarian language instruction outside the minority settlement area/contracts with teachers
    3. Pilot introduction of Romani as a supplementary mother tongue course: – continuation of the introduction of supplementary Romani courses and professional support/monitoring report, contracts with teachers and experts.

Professional and scientific content

On May 18, 2023, a professional meeting of teachers of supplementary mother tongue and culture classes was held at the INV premises from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on the topic of Elements of Language Teaching. Following the 2022 meeting, which focused on languages in contact, this year’s event featured two speakers with extensive research and teaching experience. Prof. Dr. Primož Vitez, a professor in the Department of Romance Languages and Literature at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana, delivered a lecture on the topic of students’ various learning abilities in language education (phonemic, phonetic, and graphic learning abilities). Next, Dr. Boris Kern, a researcher at the Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian Language and also a teacher of Slovenian to foreigners with many years of experience, presented on grammatical content in language instruction. After the break, a lively debate ensued, with all attendees exchanging opinions and experiences. Judging by the feedback, I conclude that the meeting will contribute to even better and more professional lesson planning for all the teachers present. The meeting was held in a hybrid format.

The meeting was attended by 14 teachers on-site and 6 online (attendance list); a recording of the lecture for individual use is available to participants. We issued certificates of participation in the training to the participants.

Attendance list for teachers: Aida Malanović, Edina Ćosić, Hanna Karhapoltseva, Jasmina Husarević, Jelena Stefanović, Julija Mesarič, Martin Mlinarič, Mateja Kosec, Nataliia Kirichenko, Olena Rozhniatovska, Olga Perić, Snežana Katarova, Sudar Agnes, Svetlana Todorović, Tamara Svrzić, Vera Haliti, Vera Majstrović Hristić, Viktoria Lutsyk, Viktoria Kurashova.
