Regular Operations of the Rijeka Unit of the Institute for Ethnic Studies in 2024
The Role of the Rijeka Unit in Strengthening the Slovene Community in Croatia (2024)
The activities of the Rijeka Unit of the Institute for Ethnic Studies in 2024 confirm its key role in researching, preserving, and developing the Slovene language, culture, and identity of the Slovene community in Croatia. By integrating scientific research, educational activities, and direct support to the community, the unit significantly contributes to greater visibility and understanding of the position of Slovenes in Croatia.
The research results and publications are of particular importance to the Slovene community, as they document both the historical and contemporary activities of Slovene associations and individuals. In doing so, they not only preserve the collective memory of the community but also strengthen its identity and recognition in the broader social context.
An important contribution is also reflected in active engagement in Slovene language education, particularly through the introduction of Slovene language instruction into the Croatian education system and the development of teaching materials. These activities enable broader access to language learning, especially among young people, which is crucial for the long-term preservation of the Slovene community.
Through its work, the Rijeka Unit strengthens cooperation among Slovene associations, scientific institutions, and state bodies in Slovenia and Croatia. This cooperation enables more effective advocacy of minority rights, better support for community activities, and greater inclusion in educational and cultural processes.
Despite the achieved results, challenges remain, particularly in terms of limited human and financial resources and the need for continued institutional support. For this reason, further systematic work and cooperation among all stakeholders are essential for the sustainable development of the community.
In conclusion, the activities of the Rijeka Unit go beyond a purely research framework, as they directly impact the preservation of the language, the strengthening of identity, and the development of the Slovene community in Croatia. Its work represents an important pillar of support for the community and contributes to its long-term existence and development in a minority context.
