Med krukastim in kljukastim križem: Koroški Slovenci v času zgodnjega nacizma
SUBJECT: Nazism | Carinthian Slovenes | Austria | Austrofascism
COBISS-ID: 265843715
Based on an extensive body of “memoir literature,” which also includes eyewitness accounts, daily and weekly newspapers, documentary material, and relevant scholarly publications, demonstrates that the establishment of Nazism and Nazi rule in Carinthia coincided not only with the escalation of discrimination against Carinthian Slovenes but also with the systematic incitement of efforts to eliminate everything associated with the Slovenian language and culture. The “Anschluss” of 1938 was prepared in an atmosphere of Austria’s transformation into an authoritarian “corporate state” with fascist characteristics. The author argues that this state considered itself “Christian” and, in comparison to Nazi Germany, a “better German state,” and that it found its appropriate expression even within the Slovenian national community. The book also offers an in-depth look at the activities of various ideological, political, and other actors, as well as the strategies of survival and resistance employed by Carinthian Slovenes following the “Anschluss” (until 1942). It also recalls figures who are scarcely known today.
