On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, a professional meeting of teachers of mother tongue and culture was held at the Institute for Ethnic Studies. The theme of this meeting was Literacy among Bilingual and Multilingual Children. The lecture and workshop facilitation were led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sabina Zorčič.
Following last year’s meeting, which focused on the role of play in language teaching, this year’s meeting delved deeper into the topic of children’s literacy. In the introductory section, we reviewed what theory says about the process of literacy acquisition in children who are learning to read and write in multiple languages. In the second part, we focused on the rich experiences of the participating teachers: they shared examples of best practices, discussed potential questions and challenges regarding literacy development in the classroom, and proposed initiatives.
