He first tackled the intertwining of demography and geography in his thesis at the Department of Geography of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ljubljana, in which he analyzed the political-geographical outline of the border region of Zgornje Obkolpje. In 2005, he obtained his doctorate with a thesis entitled Demographic Effects of Immigration in Slovenia after World War II: From the Perspective of Migration Factors and Changes in Fertility Behavior.
