Call for Papers for an International Academic Conference
Women Between Nation and Emancipation: Voluntary Associations in Multinational Settings at the Turn of the Twentieth Century

The Institute for Ethnic Studies invites paper proposals for an international academic conference devoted to the role of women in national movements and organisations in the second half of the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries.
The conference aims to explore the various forms of women’s organised participation in national movements, as well as the links between their public engagement and emancipation. The focus will be on associations as settings for mobilisation, political socialisation, education, and public engagement. Particular attention will be devoted to women’s activities in borderlands and in multinational and multilingual settings, especially within the Habsburg Monarchy.
Historical, sociological, anthropological, political science, and interdisciplinary contributions are welcome, as are comparative and transnational approaches.
Proposals must include:
- an abstract of 250–300 words in English;
- a short biographical note of no more than 100 words.
