On Tuesday, September 16, 2025, INV hosted a lecture by Andreja Zevnik, PhD (University of Manchester) and Andrew Russell, PhD (University of Liverpool) entitled The Politics of Unbelonging: Understanding and Challenging Racialisation of Roma in Europe and Beyond.
The lecturers presented findings from their recent book and offered a useful conceptualisation of belonging and non-belonging as a framework for understanding processes of exclusion. They illustrated the concepts with examples from Slovenian media and provided an overview of data on the Roma community in Europe. The discussion highlighted various aspects of the marginalization of Roma and encouraged us to reflect on the role of the majority society in coexistence with minority communities.
We sincerely thank Dr. Zevnik and Dr. Russell for an interesting and inspiring lecture.
