On Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the conference room of the Institute for Ethnic Issues hosted the presentation of Robert Devetak, PhD’s new book entitled And again the homeland calls women to help: Women’s charitable societies in Gorizia and Gradiška during the Austro-Hungarian period.
The book was jointly published by Založništvo tržaškeg tiska and INV, and was presented by editor Martina Kafol and the author, Robert Devetak, PhD, research associate at the Institute for Ethnic Issues.
The publication sheds light on the activities of women’s charitable societies of various ethnicities in the Gorizia and Gradiška regions, where organized charity played an important role in the inclusion of women in the public sphere during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the interview, Robert Devetak, PhD outlined the content of the book, how the work was created, and why it is still relevant today.
