Ethnic Issues – Coordination and Evaluation of Project Activities (Slovenians in Croatia) 2022
The process of learning the Slovene language in Croatia is complex and multifaceted, as it takes place through various forms of instruction that differ in organization, objectives, and legal frameworks. The 2022 round table provided a comprehensive insight into the situation on the ground and enabled open dialogue among teachers, institutional representatives, and the Slovene community in Croatia.
Despite the decline in the number of members of the Slovene community and speakers of the Slovene language, interest in learning Slovene is increasing, highlighting its growing importance—not only in terms of identity, but also as a source of new educational and employment opportunities.
Participants identified key challenges, including a lack of qualified teaching staff, insufficient teaching materials, and administrative barriers to introducing Slovene language instruction into the education system. There also remains a strong need for systematic networking among teachers, improvements to the curriculum, and greater institutional support.
For further development, it is essential to continue cooperation between Slovene and Croatian institutions, strengthen support for teachers, and encourage the inclusion of new generations of learners. Activities that improve access to teaching materials, enhance teacher training, and expand opportunities for the use of the Slovene language within the community also play an important role.
