Regular Operations of the Rijeka Unit of the Institute for Ethnic Studies in 2025

The Role of the Rijeka Unit in Strengthening the Slovenian Community in Croatia (2025)

The activities of the Rijeka Unit of the Institute for Ethnic Studies in 2025 confirm that research, educational, and support activities play a key role in preserving and developing the Slovenian language, culture, and identity in Croatia. The unit serves as an important hub connecting science, education, and the activities of the Slovenian community, thereby directly contributing to its greater visibility and cohesion.

The results of research hold particular significance for the Slovenian community, and in 2025, the analysis of Slovenian minority media in particular confirms that these media are one of the key drivers of internal cohesion, communication, and the community’s sense of identity. Their role goes beyond mere information provision, as they represent a fundamental mechanism for preserving the language, cultural heritage, and collective memory of Slovenians in Croatia.

Support for Slovenian language education also represents an important contribution to the community, as more than 600 children are enrolled in classes in 2025, taught by 17 teachers. This confirms that the educational system remains the central venue for transmitting the language to younger generations, which is crucial for the long-term preservation of Slovenian identity.

Through its activities, the Reka Unit also makes a significant contribution to connecting Slovenian associations, institutions, and individuals, as well as to strengthening cooperation between Slovenia and Croatia. Such networking enables better support for the community, greater access to knowledge, and increased visibility of Slovenian issues in the wider region.

Despite these positive achievements, challenges remain, primarily related to staff shortages, limited digital presence, and demographic changes. This is precisely why continued systematic support is essential to ensure the long-term stability and development of the Slovenian community in Croatia.

In conclusion, we can emphasize that the activities of the Reka Unit are not merely research or professional work, but have direct and long-term significance for the existence, development, and visibility of the Slovenian community in Croatia. Their contribution is crucial for preserving the language as a fundamental pillar of identity and for strengthening the cultural and social cohesion of the community in the border region.
