Regular Operations of the Rijeka Unit of the Institute for Ethnic Studies in 2023
The activities of the Reka Unit of the Institute for Ethnic Studies in 2023 underscore its key role in researching, monitoring, and supporting the Slovenian community in Croatia. Despite limited human resources, the unit successfully carries out a wide range of scientific research, professional, and support activities that significantly contribute to understanding the situation of Slovenians in Croatia and strengthening their social position.
In 2023, scientific and research work covered key but often under-researched areas, such as political participation, language policy, and the socio-economic status of the Slovenian community. Published articles and participation in scientific conferences have significantly contributed to raising the visibility of these topics in the broader scientific community, including at the international level.
An important part of the unit’s activities also involved collaboration with educational and academic institutions and the transfer of knowledge into the educational process. In this way, the unit contributes not only to the development of the field but also to raising awareness among young people about the importance of the Slovenian community and its status in Croatia.
In the area of rights advocacy, the unit has been actively involved in introducing the Slovenian language into the Croatian education system, where concrete results have been achieved, such as the introduction of Slovenian language instruction in new schools. At the same time, the report highlights the lengthy and demanding procedures as well as the administrative barriers that often slow down the expansion of Slovenian language instruction.
The development of teaching materials and the promotion of the Slovenian language and culture also represent an important contribution, directly supporting teachers and students and strengthening the presence of the Slovenian language in the local environment. The unit also plays a significant role in informing the public and collaborating with the media, which contributes to greater visibility of the Slovenian community.
Despite numerous achievements, key challenges remain, particularly understaffing, the complexity of administrative procedures, and the need for even greater institutional support. For long-term development, therefore, continued coordinated action by all stakeholders and the strengthening of research, educational, and support activities will be essential.
In conclusion, we can emphasize that the Reka Unit represents an important pillar of support for the Slovenian community in Croatia. Its work extends beyond the research framework, as it directly influences the preservation of the language, the strengthening of identity, and the improvement of the position of Slovenians in Croatian society.
