Seminar for Teachers of Slovene in Croatia (Zadar, 10–11 October 2025)
Despite unfavorable demographic trends, Slovene language teaching in Croatia remains a vibrant and dynamic process, based on the dedication of teachers and the systematic support of the Republic of Slovenia. In 2025, a total of 17 teachers were involved across different forms of instruction, representing a key pillar in preserving and developing the Slovene language and culture among minority communities.
Slovene language instruction is carried out in three main forms, which ensures broad accessibility but also brings differences in organization, working conditions, and institutional support. In the 2025/2026 school year, more than 500 participants are involved in Slovene language learning, confirming the important role of the education system in language preservation.
An important factor in ensuring the quality of teaching is the continuous professional development of teachers. Seminars organized since 2018 have proven to be a key platform for networking, exchanging good practices, and enhancing pedagogical competences. The evaluation of the 2025 seminar confirms a high level of participant satisfaction and the practical usefulness of the content for their teaching work.
Despite positive trends, teachers continue to face challenges such as heterogeneous groups, organizational constraints, lack of teaching materials, and inconsistent institutional support. These factors call for further systemic measures, particularly in the areas of professional training, development of teaching materials, and strengthening cooperation between institutions.
For the long-term development of Slovene language teaching in Croatia, coordinated action among all stakeholders is essential, along with continued support for teachers and active involvement of the Slovene community. Only a comprehensive approach can ensure stable development, greater student participation, and the preservation of Slovene as an important part of cultural identity.
