Supplementary instruction in native languages and cultures for children of other ethnicities
Work on the professional development project “Supplementary Instruction in Native Languages and Cultures for Students of Other Nationalities” is carried out in three separate work packages, which are, however, interconnected in terms of content and timing.
These are:
- Professional and scientific content and public relations: this involves carrying out specific professional research and scientific activities related to the project, as well as presenting the operations and content of the professional research project to interested parties and the general public. In addition to conducting research, this work package also includes professional training for stakeholders, particularly within the framework of the annual professional meeting of all participating teachers.
- Implementation of Hungarian language instruction: – assistance in conducting Hungarian language instruction outside the minority settlement area/contracts with teachers
- Pilot introduction of Romani as a supplementary mother tongue course: – continuation of the introduction of supplementary Romani courses and professional support/monitoring report, contracts with teachers and experts
Professional and scientific content
Organization of a professional meeting for teachers of supplementary mother tongue and culture classes for children of other nationalities. On May 26, 2022, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., a meeting titled “Didactics of Languages in Contact” took place at the Ministry of Education, Science, and Sport. Following the opening remarks, there was a lecture by Dr. Irina Moira Cavaion, “Language Didactics in Contact for Children with a Different Family Language,” and a professional report by Ana Brejc, “Challenges in Teaching Slovenian at a Bilingual Elementary School in Austrian Carinthia.” After the break, a lively debate ensued, along with an exchange of opinions and experiences among all attendees. Judging by the feedback, I conclude that the meeting will contribute to even better and more professional lesson planning for all participating teachers.
Attendance list for teachers: Daria Khmeleva (Russian), Jelena Stefanović and Maja Anđelović Šeguljev (Serbian), Livija Horvat (Hungarian), Mateja Kosec (Romani).
