Support and Development of Slovene Language Education in Minority Communities – Croatia 2022
The project of teaching Slovene language and culture in Varaždin County has been implemented since the 2012/2013 school year and thus represents more than a decade of continuous development and support for Slovene language learning among minority communities.
In 2022, the project was marked by challenges mainly related to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in a decrease in the number of enrolled students. Nevertheless, teaching stabilized again and resumed regular in-person delivery.
An important step in 2022 was the reorganization of teaching, whereby the work previously carried out by several teachers was taken over by a single teacher. This change provides a basis for more efficient coordination, improved communication with stakeholders, and stronger connections with the Slovene community in Croatia.
In the future, a stabilization in the number of students is expected, along with improved cooperation with educational institutions in Varaždin County and greater transparency regarding activities in the field.
Key challenges for the further development of the project remain: strengthening cooperation with Slovene organizations in Croatia, more intensive promotion of the Slovene language and culture, improved collaboration with teaching staff, and ensuring adequate teaching and learning materials. These measures will be essential for improving the quality of instruction and increasing student participation in the program.
