Support and development of the Slovenian language abroad

In 2024, the teaching of the Slovenian language abroad as part of the professional development initiative “Support and Development of the Slovenian Language Abroad” proved to be of exceptional importance for the preservation and promotion of the Slovenian language and culture on the international stage. Through in-person and distance learning, teachers reached a wide range of children and adults in more than twenty countries, which significantly contributes to preserving Slovenian identity in neighboring countries and elsewhere in Europe.

In 2024, the program included 1,158 participants, with the highest numbers in Serbia, Croatia, and North Macedonia, confirming the great need for learning Slovenian abroad. In addition to classes, professional seminars and meetings were held, enabling teachers to exchange experiences, enhance their knowledge, and strengthen mutual cooperation.

Reports, signed contracts, and disbursed funds confirm the effective funding and support provided by the Institute for Ethnic Studies and the Ministry of Education, which enabled the smooth implementation of supplementary classes and good coordination with institutions and embassies.

In 2024, the initiative “Support and Development of the Slovenian Language Abroad” contributed to an increase in the number of participants, greater accessibility of the Slovenian language, and the strengthening of Slovenian communities abroad. For further development, even closer cooperation with local communities will be key, particularly in areas where Slovenian communities are smaller but have great potential for further growth.
