Avstrija in njeni Slovenci : 1945-1976

Topics: Carinthian Slovenes | minority rights | legal protection | Austria
COBISS.SI-ID: 108419840

The writings collected here, some of which are being published in Slovenian for the first time, were all written between 1956 and 1976, with the exception of three. All of them deal with Austria’s disturbing behavior towards Slovenes in Carinthia, which in those years was increasingly directed towards the suppression and displacement of Slovenian life in the province, and, above all and immediately, to deny it its position as a historical, constitutive element, which is why Carinthia was once even known as the “Slovenian Duchy” or “Windisches Herzogtum” in the Habsburg lands.
For more than a thousand years, this was a land of two languages, which today are known as German and Slovenian, and as the author points out, it was >For more than a thousand years, this was a land of two languages, which today are called German and Slovenian, whereby, as historian Bogo Grafenauer emphasized, the Alpine Slavs were “the first people whose language has been preserved here from the time of settlement in the 6th century to the present day.” The heirs of this people and their language, the Slovenes, are therefore important for the past and present of Carinthia and for the identity it boasts. For this reason, and especially in view of the postmodern and unifying Europe, which wants to be a homeland of nations and not just a community of states, it would be fitting for Slovenians to have a dignified, equal, and secure place in this country.
