Croatian historiography has written little about the persecution of Slovenes and forced migrations to the territory of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) during World War II. Varaždin is mentioned in only a few places in this context. This article presents for the first time the identities of 167 individuals who, as a guarantee of safety, were granted citizenship rights in the area of the City of Varaždin between November 13, 1941, and June 13, 1942. These were both individuals and entire families, as evidenced by the list in the appendix.
An analysis of the data shows that most of the Slovenians who were granted security guarantees came from Varaždin or its surroundings and were employed in various public and private services or companies. The exact period of residence is also indicated for each person. Only a small number of people were found to have been expelled from Slovenia and were granted the right of residence in the city of Varaždin for this purpose.
