Slovenian Minority Media in Hungary: Current Situation and Prospects

The project examines the role of Slovenian minority media in Hungary and their importance for preserving the language, culture, and identity of the Slovenian community in Porabje. The research stems from the observation that the media landscape in ethnically mixed areas is shaped by the media of the majority population, the media of the home country, and the minority’s own media, with the latter playing a significant role in informing and uniting the community. The research was based on a combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches, specifically a survey of subscribers to the Porabje newspaper and interviews with editors of Slovenian minority media (Porabje, Radio Monošter, the TV program Slovenski utrinki). The analysis focused on media habits, language of consumption, and attitudes toward the content and future of minority media. The results show that Slovenian minority media are relatively well-received within the community, with the Porabje newspaper standing out in particular. The main reason for following the media is to obtain information about events in the community.
