The Institute for Ethnic Studies (INV) in Ljubljana is celebrating a century of operation as one of the oldest scientific research institutes for minority and ethnic issues in the world. Its work confirms that the ethnic dimension of society is key to understanding democratic processes in every time and place. Since its establishment, the INV has helped shape the understanding of ethnic issues in Slovenia and beyond through its scientific research and social engagement, and has influenced the development of policies that promote tolerance, coexistence, and inclusion.
The institute’s research covers a wide spectrum, from minority rights and identities to interethnic relations and the management of social diversity. With an emphasis on empirical data and contemporary theoretical approaches, the INV generates knowledge that transcends academic frameworks and responds to concrete social challenges. It pays particular attention to current issues of integrating different minority communities and managing ethnic and cultural diversity.
